Life safety and firestopping
Fire safety records indicate that 70% of all building-related fire deaths are caused by smoke inhalation. In most cases, the victims weren’t in the same room as the fire; many weren't even on the same floor.
New building code standards
Over the past few years, fire safety has evolved into life safety. The focus has shifted from simply trying to stop a fire, to trying to save lives when a fire starts. What used to be called the National Fire Safety Code is now known as the Life Safety Code.
More Firestop Information
The substance of the code has evolved as well, with an increased focus on containing fire and keeping smoke contained to a fire barrier “compartment.” The Life Safety Code now encourages architects and builders to make each room a sealed fire barrier compartment that will keep fire and smoke contained for several hours if needed.
Firestop makes compartmentalization work
Life safety standards mean that all openings in a fire barrier compartment must be sealed with firestopping products that prevent smoke and heat from moving into the next compartment.
At Comprehensive Risk Services we strive to be the foremost firestopping experts in the Valley. We have a staff of trained technicians and designers that can help bring an older building up to current life safety firestopping standards, or design and implement life safety firestopping in a new building.
