Asbestosis and other asbestos diseases

Asbestos disease is responsible for 20,000 deaths each year in the United States, making asbestos the leading cause of airborne disease in the country.

Asbestosis is the most common form of asbestos disease. Individuals who suffer from asbestosis have, at some point, breathed asbestos fibers into their lungs. The lungs, unable to expel the asbestos fibers, isolate them with a thick wall of scar tissue. This scarring impedes proper functioning of the lungs, leading initially to shortness of breath, and later to more serious complications.

Though asbestosis is the most common asbestos disease, it's not the only one. Asbestos diseases also include lung cancer, cancer of the esophagus, pancreatic cancer, and colon cancer.

Asbestosis and other asbestos diseases over the long term

Unfortunately, the development of asbestos-related diseases can take years, even decades. In some cases, 20 to 40 years may pass between initial asbestos exposure and diagnosis of the disease. Because of this, some individuals may unwittingly remain in a dangerous environment, inhaling asbestos fibers and increasing their chances of contracting asbestosis or another asbestos disease.

Mesothelioma cancer - the
ONLY cause is asbestos exposure

A particularly grim legacy of the historical use of asbestos is mesothelioma, which is cancer of the lining of the chest cavity or abdominal walls.

You may be at risk for asbestos disease, asbestosis, or mesothelioma

The risk of contracting asbestosis and other asbestos diseases rises with the amount of asbestos exposure. Because asbestos was so widely used, government regulations have been designed very strictly to limit exposure to workers removing asbestos, and to the people who live and work in the building where the asbestos abatement is occurring.
